The present thesis examines the Russian adaptations of the Epic of Vasilios Digenis Akritis, which are preserved in three manuscripts and fragments from a lost manuscript, all of them dating from the 16th to the 17th century. The aim of this thesis is to analyze in detail the methods a Russian translator-adaptor used to adapt this work of Greek/Late Byzantine folk literature. Through this analysis, it is attempted to interpret obscure passages in Russian texts and to investigate the origin and chronology of the translation of the Epic from Greek to Russian. The comparative study of the Russian adaptations of the Epic with its Greek versions also focuses on the aspects of Orientalism in the studied works and the construction of concepts of identity and alterity. This provides insights into the cultural interactions between Byzantium and the kingdom of Rus’. The present study contributes both to an understanding the Epic’s role in Russian literature and to a deeper investigation of medieval literature as an intercultural phenomenon. The Appendix of this thesis includes the translation of the compiled text of the Russian adaptations of the Epic of Vasilios Digenis Akritis with an introduction and commentary, as well as comparative tables featuring indicative examples of similar passages from the Greek and Russian texts under study.
Η διατριβή ερευνά τις ρωσικές διασκευές του Έπους του Βασιλείου Διγενή Ακρίτη, οι οποίες σώζονται σε τρία χειρόγραφα και σε μερικά αποσπάσματα από ένα απολεσθέν χειρόγραφο, χρονολογημένα στην περίοδο από τον 16ο έως τον 17ο αι. Στόχος της διατριβής είναι η λεπτομερής ανάλυση των μεθόδων της επεξεργασίας του έργου της ελληνικής/υστεροβυζαντινής δημώδους λογοτεχνίας από Ρώσο μεταφραστή-διασκευαστή. Μέσω της ανάλυσης, επιχειρείται η ερμηνεία δυσνόητων σημείων στα ρωσικά κείμενα και η διερεύνηση της προέλευσης και της χρονολόγησης της μετάφρασης από τα ελληνικά στα ρωσικά. Η συγκριτική μελέτη των ρωσικών διασκευών του Έπους με τις ελληνικές παραλλαγές του εστιάζει επίσης στις πτυχές του φαινομένου του Ανατολισμού στα μελετώμενα έργα και στην κατασκευή των εννοιών της ταυτότητας και της ετερότητας, προσφέροντας πληροφορίες για τις πολιτισμικές αλληλεπιδράσεις μεταξύ της Βυζαντινής Αυτοκρατορίας και τoυ Κράτους των Ρως. Η μελέτη αυτή συμβάλλει τόσο στην κατανόηση του ρόλου του Έπους στη ρωσική λογοτεχνία όσο και στη βαθύτερη έρευνα της μεσαιωνικής λογοτεχνίας ως διαπολιτισμικού φαινομένου. Το παράρτημα της διατριβής περιλαμβάνει τη μετάφραση του σύμμεικτου κειμένου των ρωσικών διασκευών του Έπους του Βασιλείου Διγενή Ακρίτη με εισαγωγή και σχόλια, καθώς και τους συγκριτικούς πίνακες με ενδεικτικά παραδείγματα στίχων παραπλήσιων στα υπό μελέτη ελληνικά και ρωσικά κείμενα.
