This dissertation studies the methods that a museum or any other cultural institution might use to protect its priceless artifacts and exhibits in the event of armed conflict. First, a historical research illustrating how museums were managing the protection of their artifacts up until World War II will be conducted. More precisely, the Greek instance is highlighted, when prominent institutions from all over Europe are also mentioned for their "safeguarding" measures. It is discussed how museums were able to protect their unique artifacts from both looting and bombing. The current situation in Ukraine cannot be ignored, as it acted as the foundation for this concept. Ukrainian museums are proved to be under attack, and modern solutions have shown to be as effective in protecting their artworks. The conventions and "legal material" shall be discussed in the last chapter in order for us to realize that, practically and legally, cultural heritage must be protected and not attacked in armed conflicts. Finally, the research findings are reviewed, with an emphasis on the preference for past and contemporary museum practices, as well as the value of each nation's cultural history. (EL)
