This dissertation was written as a part of the MSc in Cybersecurity at the International Hellenic University. The identity management in the internet has proven problematic. Nowadays the central authorities such as Certification Authorities who are responsible to authenticate all entities in the internet, have great power. Blockchain has changed this by introducing a new way of providing users’ authentication, called Self-Sovereign Identity (SSI). The dissertation provides a description of the concept of self-sovereign identity (SSI) and addresses the challenges associated with current online identity schemes. The analysis presents components of SSI, such as Decentralized Identifiers (DIDs), claims, Verifiable Credentials (VCs), and Verifiable Presentations. It discusses the suitability of blockchain for SSI, digital identity wallets, and their practical applications in the European context. A detailed overview of the European Blockchain Service Infrastructure (EBSI) and the role of digital wallets within this framework is also presented. The dissertation focuses on the technological framework, architecture, and application logic of a self-implemented digital wallet. It includes the description of work for cryptographic keys, DID generation, handling Verifiable Credentials, security configurations, database communication, Express server integration for EBSI libraries, and user interface design. Practical testing, validation, encountered challenges, and prospects for future development are also discussed, providing a thorough understanding of the SSI era, with a specific emphasis on the author's digital wallet implementation.
