This dissertation was written as part of the MA in the Classical Archaeology and the Ancient History of Macedonia at the International Hellenic University. The present MA thesis examines the animal figurines found in graves, sanctuaries and houses in the region of Macedonia. The chronological framework in which the animal figurines are examined is the Archaic, Classical and Hellenistic period. At this point it should be noted that this thesis will examine only individual animal figurines and not the ones that are part of groups of figurines that include human figures and deities or mythological animals. The current paper starts with a brief introduction. The first chapter discusses the evolution of the coroplastic art in the region of Macedonia and the techniques used for the production of the animal figurines as well as the decoration of them. The following seven chapters consist of the main focus of this thesis. In each of the main chapters one geographical region is presented at a time. The selection and the order of each geographical region is based on the modern prefectures, beginning from Kavala, followed by Serres, Chalcidice, Thessaloniki, Pella and Pieria. The main chapters discuss the various categories of animal figurines found in each area and provide details about the time frame and the context in which the figurines were discovered. The following chapter contains the interpretation of the animal figurines. Then, the last chapter has the concluding discussion with a synopsis about the use of animal figurines in the aforementioned regions understudy. Lastly, there were limitations concerning the material which was studied and used in the current thesis. These limitations are due to non-accessibility to all existing material. Nonetheless, I have chosen the material attentively attempting to give a peripheral view of this subject. (EN)
