Memory constitutes a special tool, through which one can see alternative, maybe more well-rounded versions of what happened in the past, in contrast with the public word, which is provided by history.
The expressions of memory can take a variety of forms, one of which is the form of the monument. The interesting interactions between memory and place, and, by extension, between monument and
community, as it appears in the public space, can lead to the creation of opinions, which, then, are expressed in practice. This way, they become witnesses of the functionality of the monument, as a means of memory.
Η μνήμη αποτελεί ιδιαίτερο εργαλείο, μέσω του οποίου μπορεί κανείς να εντοπίσει εναλλακτικές, ίσως πληρέστερες εκδοχές των τεκταινόμενων γεγονότων, σε σχέση με το δημόσιο λόγο, που παρέχεται από την ιστορία. Οι εκφράσεις της μνήμης μπορούν να λάβουν πληθώρα μορφών, μία από τις οποίες είναι και το μνημείο. Οι ενδιαφέρουσες αλληλεπιδράσεις, μεταξύ του χώρου και της μνήμης, και, κατ' επέκταση, του μνημείου και της κοινότητας, όπως εμφανίζεται στον δημόσιο χώρο μπορούν να οδηγήσουν στη διαμόρφωση αντιλήψεων, οι οποίες εκφράζονται, στη συνέχεια, έμπρακτα. Γίνονται, έτσι, απτή μαρτυρία της λειτουργικότητας του μνημείου, ως μέσο μνήμης.
