The author aims to examine and specify the kind of education that is suitable for a free and democratic society, as well as to indicate the mechanisms that are suitable for its cultivation and interpersonal propagation. He introduces Popper’s concept of the ‘open society’ -a useful specification of the notion of the democratic society- and analyses its institutional requirements, which are also necessary conditions for individuals to make autonomous and conscious choices. He discusses in some detail the content of such a democratic and open educational system, but also the ways to educate citizens in philosophy and science. Philosophy, science and art in a coherent structure could help individuals to conceive and evaluate the multiple aspects of the world that they live in. Furthermore, he presents the institutional framework which is a sine qua non condition for the smooth operation of an open society and refers to the social and moral development of human beings that by nature are driven by their self-interest.
