It is the aim of this article to shed light on Z. Zosimas’ collecting activity during the first decades of the 18th century. The texture and ethos of that practice as it emerges from N. Zosimas’ correspondence and from the comments of the scholars of the period are investigated. Z. Zosimas developed an interest in Greek coins from the classical period to the Byzantine times as well as in European coins and medals. The numismatic collection firmly grounds in the cultural, political and psychological mechanisms of the time. His classification of the coins demonstrates that Z. Zosimas organised carefully his own private coin exhibition which indicates the active role of the collector. His interest was not simply focused on “collecting’ but ultimately aimed at placing his collection in a museum as the ideal environment for presenting the ideology of a society and an epoch of the past. There were numerous administrative obstacles and undue delays before the collection of Zosimas, as much important in quantity as in quality, finally found a home in the National Museum of Numismatics. Thus, enlisted in the category of materials related to cultural heritage and this private collection has finally been transformed into a national collection. (EN)
