This article constitutes, in the opinion of its author and of those who collaborated in making it, possibly a definitive study of the depletions that the Greek Merchant Marine was subjected to during the War and up to 1946.
The study attempts to ameliorate and complete as humanly as possible the great omissions in the Greek naval historiography on the subject, something, which is a necessary and at the same time an extremely difficult task, due to the poverty of the Greek state Archives and the perennial ways by which some high functionaries of the Greek state keep to themselves, for their own use, the pertinent archival material, property, of course, of the Greek people and of their historical heritage.
