15 ans après une première enquête approfondie dans un village grec,peut-on mesurer la distance parcourue? Elle apparaît immense auplan de la réalité, La Grèce rurale s’est désenclavée, à la fois dans sonespace géographique, dans ses mentalités et dans ses univers humains.Pour autant, la connaissance de la campagne grecque s'en estelleaméliorée et approfondie? Ou, autre manière de formuler la question:la distance économique, psychologique et culturelle entre la villeet la campagne s’en est-elle trouvée diminuée? Dans le même temps, ilfaut constater la multiplicité des points de fusion entre les sociétésrurales et urbaines en Grèce: mode ou évolution profonde, «l'urbanisationdes campagnes» a gagné du terrain dans un pays, quin’était ni très urbanisé, ni très industrialisé. Enfin, à côté des déséquilibresrégionaux se sont encore renforcées les disparités sociales etéconomiques du monde rural, entre ceux qui ont su profiter desévolutions et ceux quelles ont anéantis. Pourtant beaucoup de cesébranlements étaient potentiellement contenus dans la société ruraletraditionnelle. Le recours à l'histoire, appuyé sur un examen attentifdes sources locales êt la perception des clivages des sociétés ruralesgrecques, devrait, mieux que beaucoup d’études macro-économiques,permettre de s’interroger sur le devenir démographique de la campagnehellénique: il reste certainement la clef essentielle de son explicationet de son aménagement.

Fifteen years after a thorough survey in a Greek village, can thedistance covered be measured? In real life, this distance seems enormous.Rural Greece is no longer isolated neither in its geographicalsituation, nor its mentalities, nor its human aspects. Has this betteredand deepened our knowledge of the Greek countryside? Or, to putthe question in another way, has this reduced the economic, psychologicaland cultural gap between city and country? At the same timewe must note the numerous melting-points shared by rural andurban Greece: whether a momentary trend or a deep-seated evolution,the «urbanization of the countryside» has made headwayin a country which was neither very urbanized nor very industriali^ed. Finally, beside regional discrepancies, social and economicdisparities in the rural world have been accentuated between thosewho know how to benefit from such an evolution and thosedestroyed by this evolution. Yet, many of these unsettling influenceswere potentially present in the traditional rural society. Turning tohistory — by closely studying local sources and clearly understandingwhat divides Greek rural societies — should allow us to examine thedemographic future of the Hellenic countryside better than manymacro-economic surveys: history undoubtedly remains the key to itsunderstanding and planning.
