Gods and Mortals in Greek and Latin Poetry is a tribute to Jenny Strauss Clay in recognition of her scholarly achievements and of the guidance, inspiration, and friendship she has generously given to her students and colleagues over her long and distinguished career. The volume opens with Diane Svarlien’s English translation of Horace’s Odes 3. 27, Daniel Mendelsohn’s vivid memoir of Clay’s mentorship, and Ward Briggs’ biography and bibliography. It continues with thirteen scholarly essays that respond to Clay’s main scholarly interests. Nancy Felson, Lucia Athanassaki, Zoe Stamatopoulou, David Kovacs, Athanassios Vergados, Thomas K. Hubbard, Anatole Mori, Benjamin Jasnow, Daniel Barber, Blanche Conger McCune, Stephen C. Smith, Christopher Nappa, and John F. Miller explore a wide range of aspects of the representation and interaction of gods and mortals in Greek and Latin poetry, topics to which Jenny Strauss Clay has repeatedly come back. (EL)
