The appearance of Roman tribes in the inscriptions of Asia Minor from the Late Republican period onward is linked both to the presence of Roman citizens (magistrates, members of the senatorial and equestrian orders, negotiatores) and to the diffusion of the Roman civitas amongst the Greeks. Moreover, starting from about the middle of the 1st c. B.C., the citizens of new Roman colonies were usually assigned to one of the official tribus. In this contribution the author presents a brief overview of the situation in the Roman colonies of Asia Minor, based on the epigraphic evidence. Out of about twenty known Roman foundations in the Asian provinces of the Empire (Asia, Bithynia et Pontus, Galatia, Lycia et Pamphylia, Cilicia, Cappadocia), those for which we have epigraphic references to one or more Roman tribes are nine (Sinope, Apamea-Myrleia, Alexandria Troas, Pisidian Antioch, Comama, Olbasa, Ninica, Germa, Iconium), while only in two cases (Alexandria Troas and Pisidian Antioch) we can indicate with certainty which tribus their citizens were assigned to (respectively Aniensis and Sergia).
