By studying the area of the Lower Danube, as well as the territory between Belgrade and Sirmium, we find recorded the conflicts between Byzantium and the Avars during the second half of the sixth and the first quarter of the seventh century A. D. Apart from the wars, the treaties and the strategic objetives of both sides at the Lower Danube, the main interest is focused on the decline of the byzantine Danube frontier, taking into account the testimony of the sources and the archaeological findings. The role of the Slavs in the conflicts is also mentioned. The archaeological remnants and the coin treasures attributed by some scholars to the avar invasions, the restoration (or not) of Byzantine rule to the Lower Danube after 626, the transfer of populations from and to the Lower Danube area, the cultural decline of Byzantium along the Danube at the beginning of the seventh century, the aspect of the collapse of the total frontier in the four provinces of the Lower Danube (Moesia Prima, Dacia Ripensis, Moesia Secunda and Scythia Minor) in 602, or later and gradually, the survival of byzantine cities and forts until the reign of Heraclius etc., are all points under consideration.
