The paper deals with the period of the Slavic migration to Poland from the late 5th/early 6th to the middle 7th century. At first, the general context of the controversy between the so-called autochthonists and allochthonists/migrationists regarding the origins of the Slavic presence in the country is cited. Having accepted the migration theory, the author presents the historical and cultural background of Poland until the middle of the 5th century (Przeworsk and Wielbark cultures). The limited testimonies from the written sources are considered in conjunction with either the survival of earlier populations or the early Slavic settlement. Further, a general outline of the Korchak-Prague culture features along with the finds on Polish territory regarding the settlements, the sunkenhuts, the burial customs, the pottery etc. is given. After having distinguished the early Slavic period in Poland in two phases, the so-called “archaic” and a second one from the middle of the 6th to the middle of the 7th century, as well as determined the Vistula river as a boundary for the Slavic expansion between the two phases, the author records the up to now archaeological evidence for the Slavic colonization of Poland following the current geographical distribution of the country in large districts. Simultaneously, emphasis is given to certain specific cultures as – the probably Slavic-Baltic during its late phase – Olsztyn culture or that of Sukow-Dziedzice, which is considered an offshoot of Korchak-Prague. According to the author, the Olsztyn and Sukow-Dziedzice are of great importance for the research of the period under consideration, as they could further elucidate the relations of the new settlers with the preexisting populations.
