Since our first study in the «Annuario della Scuola Archeologica di Atene» (2015), more funerary reliefs in the region of Aegean Thrace (between the Nestos and the Hebros rivers, NE Greece) were sampled to investigate the origin of their marble with archaeometric methods (PXRD, om on thin section, and the mass-spectrometric determination of the C & O stable isotopic ratios). A few more ancient quarries of the Eastern Macedonian region were also sampled and characterized with the same methods implementing the existing reference database of northern Greek marbles used in antiquity. Thus, we now have a better picture of the sources of marble used in the Roman period for the region and have to refine our earliest assertion that Roman reliefs were predominantly of local (Thracian) marble. In fact, six out of eleven new samples, all dated between the second century BC and the third ad, are of Thasian dolomitic marble from Cape Vathy. Three reliefs are of local marble and another two likely from Paros (from the open-pit quarries of Lakkoi). The reliefs made on the Thasian dolomitic marble may have also been executed by a skilled Thasian workman, based on certain details discussed in Andrianou 2017. Also of importance is that the relief with an inscription in a purely Thracian onomastic formula and the unfinished relief from a Thracian territory (Elaia, in the Hebros region) are carved on a local marble of a yet unknown quarry. The presence of local workshops using local marble was one of the open questions in our investigation: we definitely have now some evidence towards this direction.
