Η ανάπτυξη των πόλεων συνιστά καίριο ζήτημα για την Ευρωπαϊκή Ένωση, προσπαθεί με κάθε τρόπο να εφαρμόσει πολιτικές ολοκληρωμένης αστικής παρέμβασης, μέσω ευρωπαϊκών προγραμμάτων και κοινοτικών πρωτοβουλιών. Η Ελλάδα ως κράτος-μέλος Ε.Ε. συμμετέχει ευρωπαϊκές πρωτοβουλίες μέσω του προγράμματος URBAN. Η ελληνική περίπτωση επιδεικνύει σοβαρές ελλείψεις και προβλήματα όσον αφορά τον αστικό χώρο, την αστική διακυβέρνηση και αστικές πολιτικές και είναι ιδιαιτέρως ενδιαφέρον να αναζητηθούν οι αιτίες για την δημιουργία αυτών. Η αναζήτηση των αιτιών αυτών πραγματοποιείται μέσω εξέτασης του Δήμου Μυτιλήνης ως περίπτωση μελέτης.. Βασικό εργαλείο έρευνας αποτελούν και οι ημι-δομημένες συνεντεύξεις από τις οποίες εξήχθησαν σημαντικές πληροφορίες για τα τοπικά προβλήματα αλλά και τοπικές πολιτικές του εξεταζόμενου Δήμου.
The growth of cities recommends vital question for the European Union, which tries in every way to apply policies of accomplished urban intervention, via European programs and Community initiatives. Greece as a state-member of the E.U. participates in European initiatives via the URBAN program. The Greek case demonstrates serious lacks and problems with regards to the urban space, the urban governance and the urban policies, and it is particularly interesting to look into the causes of the creation of these elements. The research of these causes is realised via examination of the Mitilini Municipality, in the form of case study. Basic tool of research also constitute the sub-structural interviews, from which important information was exported on the local problems as well as the local policies of the examined Municipality.
