The mosaic of the Apostle Andreas from the old cathedral of Serres.

The mosaic representation of Apostle Andreas is to be found in a quadrangularniche, exactly opposite the main entrance of the ArchaeologicalMuseum of Serres.This mosaic belonged to a larger composition, the Communion of theApostles, and was decorating the niche of the Sanctuary of the Old Cathedralof Serres, dedicated to the memory of the Saints Theodori, patrons of the town.It is the unique fragment saved from the terrible fire in 1913, which damagedseverely the whole monument. This work ot art marks an artictic stagein the development of the illustration of the theme «The Communion of theApostles» and furthermore in the style going from the 11 to 12 C as well asin the history of painting of the 12 C in Serres and generally in the region ofMacedonia.The artist comes probably from a circle worthy of the standards and achievements of the art in the capital. He is a talented artist who, masteringthe artistic currents of the 11 and 12 C, creates a composition of high artisticquality.
