This chapter attempts a hermeneutic insight into the period of Middle Comedy. Through the study of ancient testimonies, modern bibliography and various surviving fragments, the chapter (a) evinces the validity of this period as both a chronological and a descriptive term, and (b) highlights the quintessential role of Middle Comedy in substantiating the coherence and continuity, as well as the change and evolution of the comic genre. Εξετάζοντας τις αρχαίες μαρτυρίες, τη σύγχρονη βιβλιογραφία και αριθμό σωζόμενων αποσπασμάτων, η μελέτη αυτή καταδεικνύει την εγκυρότητα της Μέσης Κωμωδίας όχι μόνο ως χρονολογικού προσδιορισμού αλλά και ως ουσιωδώς περιγραφικού. Ταυτόχρονα, διερευνώνται πτυχές της αλλαγής και εξέλιξης του κωμικού είδους. (EL)
