The method of characteristic sets in computer algebra for the elimination of variables in systems of polynomial equations is used here for the derivation of compatibility equations, both differential equations and difference equations, in three cases of classical straight beam problems for isotropic elastic materials. These equations are derived on the basis of well-known formulae for the deflections of the beams, where the distance along the beam, the beam length and the overall geometry-material-loading constant are eliminated. The obtained equations can be used for the verification of experimental measurements for the deflection of the points of the beam or even for deciding (on the basis of experimental measurements) whether the beam under consideration is really of one type or of another. Beyond the characteristic sets method, the Gröbner bases approach is also suggested in brief. © 1995. (EN)
