HYDROSTRAW is an MS-Excel based application for the simulation of nonisothermal dilute acid hydrolysis or prehydrolysis of cellulosic materials, such as wheat straw. The kinetics of dilute-acid hydrolysis of cellulose and hemicelluloses was incorporated in this application. Cellulose crystallinity and the resistant to hydrolysis hemicelluloses fraction, as well its the formation of intermediate soluble oligosaccharides, played major roles in the overall process simulation. II four-step kinetic model was used to describe the reaction system for both cellulose and hemicelluloses. The degree of polysaccharides degradation was expressed as a function of a hydrolysis reaction factor, which incorporated the effects of acid activity, temperature and reaction time. (EN)
