A transient stability index which can be used for online security assessment of power systems by providing a measure for their level of security is presented. This index is constructed applying a computational technique based on the principles of pattern recognition and fuzzy set theory. The results that can be obtained using the index in the transient stability evaluation of power systems are illustrated by the analysis of a sample transmission system. (EN)
