The paper will present the evolution of the Higher Education Policy followed over time by the initial three Higher Military Academies (ASS). Itfocuses on the challenges that have been presented over time, on the reforms of their institutional framework, up to their modern form as HigherMilitary Educational Institutions (ASEI, Law 3187/2003). However, there seem to be reasons why the issue of the establishment of a National DefenceUniversity keeps coming back even today. The efforts made over the last 25 years, the opportunities provided by establishing such a university, andthe difficulties of its implementation are presented.
