To evaluate the long-term results of a first metatarsophalangeal joint (MTPJ) fusion a series of 70 arthrodeses in 42 patients was reviewed. Thirty-seven out of 42 patients (62 fusions) were available for clinical and radiological evaluation, 2-31 years postoperatively (average: 21.5 years). The surgical technique was identical in all patients and based on a cone shaped 'ball and socket' configuration of the first MTPJ. Fixation was achieved with a screw. The study showed that the first MTPJ fusion is a consistently successful operation that relieves pain and corrects deformity and its good results remain unchanged for up to 31 years. (EN)
