Στην παρούσα διπλωματική εργασία αναλύεται διεξοδικά η μορφή της Venus-Αφροδίτης στα ομηρικά έπη, στα Ἀργοναυτικά του Απολλωνίου Ροδίου και στο λατινικό έπος του Βιργιλίου. Εξετάζοντας τις σκηνές της Venus σε ολόκληρη την Αἰνειάδα, εστιάζω στην προγενέστερη ελληνική παράδοση και στον τρόπο με τον οποίο προσλαμβάνεται η μορφή της Αφροδίτης στο λατινικό έπος. Η διακειμενικότητα των εν λόγω κειμένων έχει απασχολήσει ήδη τους μελετητές, αλλά η συγκεκριμένη στόχευση της εργασίας αφορά ειδικότερα στην ανάδειξη της πολυπλοκότητας του χαρακτήρα της Venus. Η θεά είναι η μητέρα του βασικού ήρωα στο βιργιλιανό έπος και ενστερνίζεται όλα τα χαρακτηριστικά που της απέδωσε η προηγηθείσα παράδοση. Αντικείμενο σχολιασμού αποτελεί επίσης και η σχέση που έχει ο Λατίνος ποιητής με τα επικά παράλληλα• σε ποιο βαθμό τα ανανεώνει ή παρεκκλίνει από αυτά, ορίζοντας τη Venus ως πολυσχιδή μορφή με πληθώρα χαρακτηριστικών. Στην προσπάθειά του να σκιαγραφήσει αυτόν τον πολυσύνθετο χαρακτήρα, ο Βιργίλιος χρησιμοποιεί στοιχεία τόσο θετικά, όπως την ανάδειξη του μητρικού αισθήματος, όσο και λιγότερο κολακευτικά, όπως την κλίση της θεάς στην απάτη και τον έρωτα. Μέσω της εκ του σύνεγγυς ανάγνωσης και ανάλυσης του λατινικού κειμένου αναδεικνύονται τα επικά, κυρίως, παράλληλα, τα οποία ο Ρωμαίος ποιητής καταφέρνει να ενσωματώσει στο πρόσωπο της βασικής θεότητας του έργου και να ανανεώσει. Η Venus συνδυάζει όλα τα παλαιότερα χαρακτηριστικά της και περικλείει αρκετές ταυτότητες, όμως στην Αἰνειάδα υπερισχύει αυτή της μητέρας.

This thesis examines the figure of Venus-Aphrodite in the Homeric epics, the Argonautica of Apollonius of Rhodes and the Latin epic of Virgil in detail. By focusing on the Venus΄scenes throughout the Aeneid, this study aims to discuss how the figure of Venus is perceived in the Latin epic through the earlier Greek tradition. Scholars have already engaged with intertextuality among these texts, but the focus of the present study is on the complexity of Venus’ character: the goddess is the mother of the main hero in the Aeneid and she embodies all the characteristics attributed to her in the preceding tradition. The relationship between Virgil and the epic parallels is also the subject of commentary; the extent to which the poet renews, or deviates from, these parallels, defining Venus as a multifaceted figure. In his attempt to delineate this complex character, Virgil uses elements that are both positive, such as her maternal feelings, as well as less flattering, such as the goddess's inclination to deception and love. Through a close reading and analysis of the Latin text, it becomes evident that the epic parallels are highlighted, and that the Roman poet has successfully incorporated them into the persona of the main deity, thereby renewing them. The character of Venus comprises her previous characteristics and encompasses a multiplicity of identities, the most important of which, however, in the Aeneid is that of the mother.
