Η διπλωµατική αυτή έχει σαν στόχο να ερευνήσει τις τεχνικές και το ηχόχρωµα του
επαυξηµένου κλαρινέτου στον τζαζ αυτοσχεδιασµό και στον σύγχρονο
αυτοσχεδιασµό γενικότερα. Παράλληλα, µελετώνται οι ιδιότητες του παιξίµατος
εκτελεστών του τζαζ κλαρινέτου τεσσάρων διαφορετικών περιόδων ως έµπνευση,
από την παραδοσιακή τζαζ της Νέας Ορλεάνης µέχρι και την ethnic jazz του σήµερα.
Επίσης, χρησιµοποιούνται οι υπάρχουσες δυνατότητες του κλαρινέτου και
επεκτείνονται µε τη βοήθεια µιας πεταλιέρας µε διάφορα εφέ, και έτσι, δηµιουργείται
ένας πρωτοποριακός ήχος στην αυτοσχεδιαστική κυρίως εκτέλεση του οργάνου,
ξεπερνώντας έτσι, ουσιαστικές εκτελεστικές δυσκολίες και δίνοντας ώθηση για
επιπλέον διερεύνηση και βελτίωση των τεχνολογιών που χρησιµοποιούνται έως τώρα
στην εκτέλεση του κλαρινέτου. Σε συνέχεια αυτής της σκέψης, σκοπός της
διπλωµατικής αυτής εργασίας είναι να µελετηθούν οι ακουστικές ιδιότητες και ο
πρωτοποριακός ήχος που προσδίδουν τα διάφορα αυτά εφέ (modulation και time
effects pedals) στο κλαρινέτο και να εξερευνηθούν νέοι τρόποι αυτοσχεδιασµού στα
κοµµάτια: Si tu vois ma mere του Sidney Bechet (1952), Cantaloupe Island του
Herbie Hancock (1964) και το Little Sunflower του Freddie Hubbard (1967). Τελικός
στόχος είναι να αντιληφθούµε κατά πόσο το κλαρινέτο, µέσω της τεχνολογικής
εξέλιξης και της επαύξησης, µπορεί να προσφέρει στον εκτελεστή-αυτοσχεδιαστή τη
δυνατότητα να υπάρξει και σε πιο σύγχρονα µουσικά περιβάλλοντα, να ενταχθεί και
να αλληλεπιδρά µέσα σε ένα µουσικό σύνολο fusion ή πειραµατικής jazz ή ακόµα και
στην ηλεκτρονική µουσική και την σκληρή ροκ (hard rock), µαζί µε θορυβώδη
ηλεκτρικά όργανα και τύµπανα (drumset).

This thesis aims to investigate the techniques and timbre of the augmented clarinet in
jazz improvisation and contemporary improvisation in general. At the same time, the
performance qualities of jazz clarinet players during four different periods - from the
traditional jazz of New Orleans to the ethnic jazz of today- are studied as an
inspiration. In addition, the capabilities of the clarinet are used and expanded with the
help of a pedalboard with various effects, and thus, an innovative sound is created for
the instrument’s improvisational performance. This way, we are able to overcome
performance difficulties and proceed to further investigation and improvement of the
technologies that are used in clarinet performance. In continuation of this thought, the
purpose of this thesis is to study the acoustic properties and this innovative sound that
these effects (modulation and time effects pedals) give to the clarinet and to explore
new ways of improvisation of the following pieces: Si tu vois ma mere by Sidney
Bechet (1952), Herbie Hancock's Cantaloupe Island (1964) and Freddie Hubbard's
Little Sunflower (1967). The final goal is to understand whether the clarinet, through
technological development and augmentation, can offer the performer-improviser the
possibility to exist in contemporary musical environments, to join and interact within
a fusion or experimental jazz ensemble, or even within electronic music and hard
rock, along with noisy electric instruments and drums (drumset).
