Οι βουλές των πόλεων και τα μέλη τους, οι βουλευτές, υπήρξαν για αιώνες θεσμός κεντρικής σημασίας για την Ρωμαϊκή διοίκηση. Μέχρι τα τέλη του 7ου αιώνα μ.Χ., παρόλα αυτά, είχαν πρακτικά εξαφανιστεί. Αυτή η εργασία ερευνά την εξέλιξη αυτού του θεσμού στην Ρωμαϊκή Ανατολή κατά την Ύστερη Αρχαιότητα, από τον 3ο αιώνα μ.Χ., όταν αυτή η παρακμή ξεκίνησε, μέχρι την τελική του εξαφάνιση τον 7ο. The municipal curiae and their members, the decuriones, had for centuries been an institution central to the Roman administration. By the end of the 7th century AD, however, they were effectively extinct. This paper examines how this institution developed in the Late Antique East, from the 3rd century AD, when this decline properly started, until its ultimate demise in the 7th. A variety of aspects of this institution are investigated, from the functions of the decuriones and their place within the cities and the empire to the flight of the curiales and the possible link between their decline and that of the classical polis.
