Fibrinogen, plasminogen activator inhibitor (PAI-1) and lipoprotein a (Lp(a)), have been associated with increased cardiac risk, especially in hypercholesterolemic patients. The aim of this study was to access the role of dyslipidemia on specific thrombogenic factors in children with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (hFH). We studied 15 non-smoking children with hFH (group A) and 15 non-smoking normal siblings (group B) (mean age 14.0+3.6 vs 15±5 years old, p=NS) of comparable weight (49.5±15 kgrvs 51±14kgr, p=NS) and height (157±15 cm vs 157±15cmvs 157±16 cm, p=NS). Lipids, Lipoprotein a [Lp(a)j, lipoproteins, fibrinogen in mg/dl and plasminogen activator inhibitor (PAI-1) in lU/ml were measured. Results (mean±SD) and the statistical evaluation are presented in the following Table: Group A Group B P value TC 280±48 164±28 <0.00001 TG 78±25 68±20 NS HDL-C 45±7 47±9 NS LDL-C 220±47 104+29 <0.0001 ApoAl 137±18 148±22 NS ApoB 198±41 104±21 <0.0001 Lp(a) 25±11 33±25 NS Fibrinogen 229±32 225±27 NS PAI-1 2.16±1 1.86±1 NS It is concluded that overt hypercholesterolemia in hFH chldren does not imply disturbance of specific thrombogenic factors. © Pearson Professional Ltd 1996.
