At the beginning of the 17th century Spain still dominated the world. However, as the Spanish Monarchy entered this century, it encountered a period of economic recession and political power. With the resumption of the war against the Netherlands, located in Flanders, and the aggressiveness of other kingdoms, such as France, Spanish Monarchy was obliged to defend its possessions. The defender of the Empire was the army, which had as a backbone of its operation, the tercios of the Spanish infantry. The tercios consisted, mostly, of veteran soldiers, who had great skills in the art of war and enviable discipline. They were considered as a fearsome army having a notorious reputation of invincibility. This research focuses on the presentation of the Spanish tercios, as well as, on their accomplishments and failures during the period of the reign of King Philip IV, through the movie Alatriste, whose protagonist is a veteran of the old tercios of Flanders, who attended the most crucial battles of the Thirty Years' War.
