Cyprus has been divided since 1974, and the reunification talks have made slow progress. With the increasing environmental challenges, various forms of ventures have been undertaken by the two communities with the support of supranational and international organizations, such as European Union (EU) and United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The environmental cooperation, like management of natural resources and integration of environmental policies, leads to conflict resolution and prevention, revealing its potential for reducing political fragility and function in facilitating positive peace. Some progress has been achieved not only in environmental protection but also in sustaining peace process. The key to an effective contribution of the environmental dimension of prevention, peace-making and peace-building is considered to be broader public participation as well as the promotion of sustainable and win-win solutions in the environmental sector for both communities.
