The subject of the present thesis is fool in popular myth. The character of this peculiar figure has been examined through 167 variations of tales, jests, anecdotes, legends, fables which divided into categories, according to their thematic material, with the help of the catalog of international tale types and the Greek catalog of Georgios A. Megas. The analysis of the structural and expressional features of the folktales, the approximation of the foolish man and woman -it has been found out on the basis of the material which was examined that a differentiation takes place between two sexes, insane hero and heroine-, the comparison with fool in social reality constitute the fundamental elements of the study. Finally it has been ascertained that the Greek material preserves an important content for the particularity of this character which could supplement the international folktale catalog.
