The contribution of the Ecumenical Patriarchate in the expansion and consolidation of Orthodox amongst the people of South East Asia is definitive. Within the present study the historical basis of the missionary activity carried out by the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, especially during the Byzantine Period, was investigated initially. Secondly the attempts of the Orthodox Patriarchate of Moscow to prevail as the main ecclesiological centre meant that it gave much emphasis on mission. As a consequence both Churches found themselves involved in the Far East at some time. Issues of jurisdiction have been bequeathed to the present time. The Ecumenical Patriarchate equipped with all the necessary historical, institutional, canonical and spiritual preconditions is the most suitable for carrying out Orthodox Mission is Asia. The recently established ecclesiastical centres (Metropolis of Hong Kong, Korea and Singapore) that are under the jurisdiction of the Ecumenical Patriarchate are proof of it’s interest and dedication to Orthodox mission in the Far-East Asia region.
Η συμβολή του Οικουμενικού Πατριαρχείου στην εξάπλωση και εδραίωση της Ορθοδοξίας στους λαούς της Άπω Ανατολής είναι καθοριστική. Στη μελέτη μας εξετάσαμε αρχικά την ιστορική βάση της ιεραποστολικής δραστηριότητας του Οικουμενικού Πατριαρχείου. Ιδιαίτερα κατά την Βυζαντινή περίοδο, καθώς και την προσπάθεια της Ρωσικής εκκλησίας να επιβληθεί ως κυρίαρχο εκκλησιαστικό κέντρο, αναπτύσσοντας και η ίδια ιεραποστολικές δράσεις. Στη συνέχεια αναλύσαμε όλες τις ιεραποστολικές πρωτοβουλίες και δραστηριότητες του Οικομενικού Πατριαρχείου που σχετίζονται με την Άπω Ανατολή.
