During the last decade there is an increasing interest in the design and creation on healing gardens, especially inside health-care facilities. One can find many books, articles and texts regarding healing gardens focused on children, elderly, psychiatric patients and people suffering from dementia. But healing gardens are constructed most of the times inside small, private institutions and address particular groups of people, while, on the contrary, grander clinics and especially public hospitals do not possess such gardens. Even when a healing garden is constructed, it is many times located in a remote area and refers to a particular group of patients. Furthermore, there are many reports regarding healing gardens that are underused or patients that are prohibited from using them short after their installment.
This thesis is concerned with the reasons that impede the installment of healing gardens in health-care facilities, the way in which the creation of healing gardens will be more applicable to more patients and the design principles that these gardens should conform to.
At the first stage a thorough research on the existing literature has provided many answers regarding the ways that environment can amend health, the special needs that the different groups of patients have, aspects about horticultural therapy and case studies of utilized healing gardens. To answer the rest of the questions, a survey was conducted in the General Hospital of G. Papanikolaou of Thessaloniki. By using two extended questionnaires that were answered by the hospital staff and their interpretation by Categorical Principal Component Analysis, a vast amount of helpful, new information was concluded.
These conclusions were combined with the available literature information so as to create a matrix of the basic problems, limitations and perspectives that apply to any particular healing garden. Additionally, this matrix is accompanied by a condensed methodology that refers to the planning stages and design concepts that lead to a successful healing garden, regardless of its size and type of clinic or hospital it is made for.
Σκοπός της παρούσας διατριβής αποτελεί η διαπίστωση της αναγκαιότητας της δημιουργίας θεραπευτικών κήπων στα νοσηλευτικά ιδρύματα, οι βασικές αρχές σχεδιασμού, οι οποίες πρέπει να διέπουν αυτούς τους κήπους, και η αναζήτηση των βασικότερων προβλημάτων τα οποία παρουσιάζονται κατά τη σχεδίαση, την κατασκευή και τη λειτουργία τους.
Η έρευνα που πραγματοποιήθηκε απέδειξε την αναγκαιότητα της δημιουργίας θεραπευτικών κήπων στα νοσηλευτικά ιδρύματα, καθώς η διαδικασία της ίασης μπορεί, να επιταχυνθεί, όταν οι ασθενείς αισθάνονται άνετα και βρίσκονται σε εύκολα αντιληπτό και λειτουργικό χώρο. Ο συνδυασμός των στοιχείων που συνθέτουν τον κήπο, αποτελούν ικανό αγχολυτικό και καταπραϋντικό μέσο που βοηθά τον ασθενή να αλλάξει διάθεση, να επιταχύνει την ανάρρωσή του και να τονώσει την αισιοδοξία του. Η δημιουργία ενός υποστηρικτικού περιβάλλοντος μπορεί να χρησιμοποιηθεί, για να προληφθούν νέα προβλήματα και να βελτιωθούν ήδη υπάρχουσες δυσκολίες. Εξάλλου η έννοια θεραπεία, πέρα από την πλήρη ανάρρωση από μια συγκεκριμένη νόσο ή ατύχημα, μπορεί να σημαίνει και την ανακούφιση από τα συμπτώματα - ιδιαίτερα σημαντικό, όταν πρόκειται για χρόνιες ή και θανατηφόρες ασθένειες- την επαναφορά της ψυχοσωματικής αρμονίας ή την επανένταξη του ατόμου στην καθημερινότητα.
