The relationship between the City - European Capital of Culture and Culture constitutes the central issue of the analysis, more precisely between the institution of the ECoCs, the programmes of cultural manifestations (non-spatial typologies) and urban and architectural interventions (spatial typologies). The analysis is multi-criterial, referring to the ‘being’ and the ‘becoming’ of the all four cities - ECoCs, while emphasizing the ranking between the ‘elite’ and ‘grassroots’ culture (culture with ‘C’ and ‘c’). Four cities - ECoCs (Athens 1985, Glasgow 1990, Lisbon 1994 and Thessaloniki 1997) are analyzed ‘monographically’ and correlationally, with an emphasis on the concept of Urban Syntactic Identity - constituting the epistemological ‘break through’ of the work - proposed to be generated by the spatial correlation of Urbanity and Intelligibility in the framework of the Space Syntax theory, AAS, UCL. The qualitative attributes of the ECoCs spatial programmes are evaluated through their spatial convergences and divergences in terms of their syntactic attributes (Urbanity, Intelligibility, Identity) from where general principles (laws) are drawn (‘genotypes’ / ‘phenotypes’). The findings are related to the European Union’s central goal for the «new European identity» and the institution’s one for the «approachment of the European peoples». The enrichment of the concepts of Culture and the European culture is proposed, along with the elaboration of the ‘generic’ spatial, ‘cultural’ and ‘eurocal’ syntactic Identity, as well as a set of rules and guidance for the preparation of the programmes of cultural manifestations and especially of spatial interventions by the candidate and future ECoCs.
Κεντρικό ζήτημα της ανάλυσης αποτελεί η σχέση μεταξύ πόλης - Πολιτιστικής Πρωτεύουσας της Ευρώπης και πολιτισμού, ακριβέστερα μεταξύ του θεσμού, των προγραμμάτων πολιτιστικών εκδηλώσεων (α-χωρικές τυπολογίες) και των πολεοδομικών, αστικών και αρχιτεκτονικών παρεμβάσεων (χωρικές τυπολογίες). Η ανάλυση είναι πολυκριτηριακή, επιχειρείται ως προς το ‘είναι’ και το ‘γίγνεσθαι’ των τεσσάρων πόλεων με αφορμή τον θεσμό της Π.Π.Ε., ενσωματώνοντας και τη διάκριση μεταξύ του ‘επίσημου’ και του ‘λαϊκού’ πολιτισμού (πολιτισμός ‘Π’ & ‘π’). Οι τέσσερις πόλεις - Π.Π.Ε. (Αθήνα 1985, Γλασκόβη 1990, Λισσαβόνα 1994 και Θεσσαλονίκη 1997) αναλύονται ‘μονογραφικά’ και συσχετιστικά, με έμφαση στην έννοια της Αστικής Συντακτικής Ταυτότητας - η οποία αποτελεί επιστημολογική καινοτομία της έρευνας - που προτείνεται να προκύπτει από τη χωρική συσχέτιση της Αστικότητας και της Καταληπτότητας, στα πλαίσια της θεωρίας Space Syntax Analysis, AAS, UCL. Αξιολογούνται τα ποιοτικά χαρακτηριστικά των προγραμμάτων μέσω των χωρικών τους συγκλίσεων και διαφοροποιήσεων ως προς τις συντακτικές ιδιότητες (Αστικότητα, Καταληπτότητα, Ταυτότητα) και εξάγονται οι γενικοί κανόνες, που τις διέπουν (‘γενότυποι’ / ‘φαινότυποι’). Τα αποτελέσματα συσχετίζονται με τον στόχο της Ε.Ε. για τη «νέα ευρωπαϊκή ταυτότητα» και του θεσμού για «το πλησίασμα των λαών της Ευρώπης». Προτείνονται ο εμπλουτισμός των εννοιών του πολιτισμού και του ευρωπαϊκού πολιτισμού, οι έννοιες της ΄γενικής’ χωρικής, της ΄πολιτισμικής’ / ‘πολιτιστικής’ και της ‘ευρω-τοπικής’ συντακτικής Ταυτότητας, καθώς και ένα σύνολο κανόνων και συμβουλών για την κατάστρωση των προγραμμάτων από τις υποψήφιες και τις μελλοντικές πόλεις – Π.Π.Ε.
