This doctoral dissertation examines the course of the National Progressive Center Union (EPEK), a party that became indissolubly associated with the concept of the political Center, during the period 1949–1953. The paper begins in the post-Liberation period, when a series of issues affecting Greece’s political life were identified, which EPEK then capitalized on, whether positively or negatively; at the same time, the first signs of the emergence of a new political space, the Center, were detected, not only on the level of discourse, but also, primarily, on the level of political practice. The examination of the EPEK begins with the fruitless efforts in 1948 to establish a party, Nikolaos Plastiras’ Progressive Liberal Party, which ended with the creation of the EPEK. The investigation into the party focuses on its internal operation (organization, formation, statutes), its political personnel (MPs and statesmen), its policy during the parliamentary, as well as municipal elections (political program, electoral discourse, partnerships strategy), as well as the party’s internal processes throughout the entire period. All the above are considered in conjunction with the Liberal Party, as these two parties constituted the Center’s mainstay. The concept of the Center permeates the entire dissertation, which documents the convergences as well the divergences between the two parties regarding the political project of the Center, as well as the evolution of this concept during the early post-civil war period.
Η διατριβή εξετάζει την πορεία της Εθνικής Προοδευτικής Ένωσης Κέντρου (ΕΠΕΚ) κατά την περίοδο 1949-1953, ενός κόμματος που συνδέθηκε άρρηκτα με την έννοια του Κέντρου. Η μελέτη εκκινεί από την περίοδο μετά την Απελευθέρωση, οπότε εντοπίζονται μία σειρά από ζητήματα της πολιτικής ζωής της χώρας, τα οποία «κεφαλαιοποίησε» η ΕΠΕΚ είτε θετικά, είτε αρνητικά και παράλληλα ανιχνεύονται οι πρώτες ενδείξεις της εμφάνισης ενός νέου πολιτικού χώρου, του Κέντρου, τόσο σε επίπεδο λόγου αλλά, κυρίως, σε επίπεδο πολιτικής πρακτικής. Η μελέτη της ΕΠΕΚ έχει ως αφετηρία τις ατελέσφορες προσπάθειες ίδρυσης κόμματος το 1948, το Κόμμα Προοδευτικών Φιλελευθέρων του Νικόλαου Πλαστήρα, και τέλος τη συγκρότηση της ΕΠΕΚ. Η μελέτη του κόμματος εστιάζει στην εσωτερική λειτουργία του (οργανωτική, συγκρότηση, καταστατικό), το πολιτικό του προσωπικό (βουλευτές και πολιτευτές), την πολιτική του στις βουλευτικές αλλά και δημοτικές εκλογές (πολιτικό πρόγραμμα, προεκλογικός λόγος, στρατηγική συνεργασιών), αλλά και στις διεργασίες που συντελούνται στο εσωτερικό του κόμματος σε όλη την περίοδο. Όλα τα παραπάνω εξετάζονται εκ παραλλήλου με το Κόμμα Φιλελευθέρων, καθώς τα δύο αυτά κόμματα αποτέλεσαν τον κορμό του Κέντρου. Η έννοια του Κέντρου διαπερνά το σύνολο της διατριβής και αποτυπώνονται οι συγκλίσεις αλλά και αποκλίσεις των δύο κομμάτων γύρω από το πολιτικό πρόταγμα του Κέντρου, καθώς και η μετεξέλιξη της έννοιας αυτής κατά την πρώιμη μετεμφυλιακή περίοδο.
