The Antikythera mechanism: astronomy and technology in ancient Greece

Anastasiou, Magdalini

The Antikythera Mechanism is a unique archaeological artifact that displays the astronomical knowledge of its time (around 150 BC) and at the same time reveals a level of ancient engineering and technology for which there was hardly any expectation. In this thesis, various features of the Mechanism, either unexamined before or reexamined with new results, are presented. Chapter 1 is an introduction to the Antikythera Mechanism and to our current knowledge of this ancient machine. The original research conducted in this thesis is presented in Chapters 2 to 5 while Chapter 6 presents the Aristotle University models of the Antikythera Mechanism that were constructed based on measurements taken during this doctoral thesis. More precisely, in Chapter 2 the original form of the pointer of the Meton spiral as well as of the mechanism that supported and rotated it are described. The pointer actually slid at its hub end (and was not fixed there and extendible at its other end as it was previously published). The mechanism that transferred the motion of the axis to the pointer allowing it at the same time to freely move so as to follow the gap between the windings of the spiral is reconstructed from its few remains and is proven to be brilliantly designed. The proposed structure is nicely confirmed from its description on the back cover inscriptions of the Mechanism. In the same chapter, the type of both spirals of the back face of the Mechanism is examined and both the Metonic and the Saros dial of the back face of the Antikythera Mechanism are proven to have been designed as Half Circles Spirals, drawn from two different centres (as it was also supported by two previous publications). The unwanted eccentricity that would be produced, by the half-circle spiral construction, to the readings of the semicircles that were not drawn from the pointer centre is shown (by three different analyses) to be skilfully avoided by the drawing of these cell divisions so that they all point to the pointer centre. In Chapter 3, some of the new readings, related mainly to the identification of the intercalary month of the calendar of the Meton spiral, are presented. The month names of this calendar are also compared, through a new map, to the known to date month names of the calendars of the ancient Greek cites and three locations are identified as possible places of use of the Mechanism. The readings of the divisions of the Saros spiral increased by 1 the number of the surviving spiral’s divisions with engraved symbols. In Chapter 4, the star events of the main surviving fragment of the Parapegma of the Mechanism are very thoroughly studied. A new method of analysis of these events is applied based on a new software program that was written from first principles and calculates the dates of these visible star risings and settings. From this analysis, a possible range of latitudes where the Mechanism could have been used is found. The method was also applied to other parapegmata and in the case of Ptolemy, the results corroborate very well the geographic region that Ptolemy describes. Finally, in Chapter 5, the form of the equation of time at the Mechanism’s epoch is calculated. The equation of time must have been understood around 150 B.C. and so could have also been displayed on the Mechanism. The structure of the indecipherable fragment D is presented and the first results show a nice correlation with the curve of the equation of time.
