The island of Chios throughout its long-standing history over the centuries constitutes the place where the Orthodox Christian and the Roman Catholic elements coexisted. The scope of this doctorate thesis is not only to search for and thoroughly record the data regarding the cult and iconography of the Saints Physicians Cosma and Damian, but to highlight the relationship of the above mentioned religious figures to medical science and practice via the iconography on the island of Chios. In addition, it will be attempted to approach and present the subject in its entirety in correlation with the overall Greek and European standards of the corresponding era.According to the above mentioned parameters, the research of the proposed thesis is divided into three main sections based on territorial criteria: Firstly, the Greek domain of Orthodox influence where the overwhelming majority of people follow the Eastern Church doctrines, secondly, the broader areas of Southern-Europe where the cult and iconography of the Doctor Saints Cosma and Damian are widespread and thirdly in Chios and the areas in its immediate vicinity where research in local temples, monasteries, private collections and museums was carried out. Regarding the last component of the project, exclusively covering the island Chios, the photographic material selected exhibiting the iconographic representations of the Saints was obtained after having conducted personal research in more than 200 churches and monasteries. This material was accompanied by ecclesiastical artifacts such as reliquaries, and books of prayers obtained from private collections, which constitute strong evidence that further supports the widespread cult of the two revered Holy Figures. Furthermore, relevant information was gathered from the local library prior to the completion of the undertaken study.In Chios, there is a wide variety of holy icons depicting the two Saints either next to each other in Their typical representation or accompanied by other Holy Figures including scenes from Their lives. In Chian iconography that follows the same standards of iconography that can be encountered in greater in the rest of Greece and abroad, the two Doctor Saints are portrayed with a series of medical and pharmaceutical instruments. The same image of Them has also been preserved and disseminated by an extensive range of means like icons, engravings, statues, medals, seals of various medical societies, stamps and modern artwork. This material is heterogeneous and literally derives its descent from many countries. The Chian iconography as a whole is a cultural bridge consisting of two main components: the Greek and the European. The churches provide a large number of images mainly dating back to the 19th century as well as the private collections, which feature works of special interest. The iconographic representations of the Saints in Chios are in full accordance with the Medical Practices of their era, which is fully attested mainly by the medical instruments borne by the Martyr-Saints Cosma and Damian.
Η νήσος Χίος απετέλεσε κατά τη διάρκεια της μακρόχρονης ιστορίας της τόπο όπου συνυπήρξε το Ανατολικό και το Δυτικό θρησκευτικό στοιχείο. Σκοπός της παρούσας διδακτορικής διατριβής δεν είναι μόνο η αναζήτηση και λεπτομερή καταγραφή στοιχείων σχετικά με την λατρεία και την εικονογραφία των ιατρών Αγίων Αναργύρων Κοσμά και Δαμιανού αλλά η ανάδειξη της σχέσης τους με την ιατρική επιστήμη διαμέσου της εικονογραφίας στο νησί της Χίου και παράλληλα η παρουσίαση του θέματος σαν ολότητα σε συνάρτηση με τη γενικότερη Ελληνική και Ευρωπαϊκή διάσταση.Με βάση τον παραπάνω σκοπό η έρευνα χωροταξικά διαχωρίστηκε σε τρία τμήματα. Στον ελληνικό χώρο και στις χώρες όπου υπάρχουν ορθόδοξοι πληθυσμοί. Στο νοτιοευρωπαϊκό χώρο όπου η λατρεία και η εικονογραφία των αγίων Κοσμά και Δαμιανού είναι ευρύτατα διαδεδομένη. Στο Χιακό χώρο με επιτόπια έρευνα σε Ναούς, Μονές, ιδιωτικές συλλογές και Μουσεία.Στη Χίο το υλικό συλλέχθηκε μετά από επιτόπια έρευνα σε περισσότερες από 200 εκκλησίες και Μονές, όπου αναζητήθηκαν, εντοπίστηκαν και ελήφθησαν φωτογραφίες των παραστάσεων των αγίων. Το υλικό πλαισίωσαν οι λειψανοθήκες και τα προσκυνητάρια, δείγματα της λατρείας τους. Eπιπρόσθετα συμπληρώθηκε από αντικείμενα τα οποία φυλάσσονται σε ιδιωτικές συλλογές. Παράλληλα αναζητήθηκαν σχετικές πληροφορίες στην τοπική βιβλιογραφία. Στη Χίο απαντούν διάσπαρτες εικονίσεις που ξεκινούν από την κλασσική τους εικόνιση με τον ένα δίπλα στον άλλο. Παράλληλα μαζί με άλλους αγίους καθώς και σκηνές από το Βίο των αγίων. Στην Χιακή εικονογραφία όπως στην υπόλοιπη Ελλάδα και στο εξωτερικό, οι άγιοι κρατούν ανά χείρας μια ποικιλία εργαλείων της ιατρικής και της φαρμακευτικής τέχνης. Οι άγιοι εμφανίζονται σε εικόνες, χαρακτικά, αγάλματα, μετάλλια, σφραγίδες ιατρικών συντεχνιών γραμματόσημα και μοντέρνα έργα τέχνης. Η προέλευση του υλικού είναι ετερογενής και προέρχεται από πολλές χώρες.Η Χιακή εικονογραφία εν τω συνόλο αποτελεί πολιτισμική γέφυρα δυο συνιστωσών. Την Ελληνική και την Ευρωπαϊκή. Στις εκκλησίες της φυλάσσεται ένας μεγάλος αριθμός εικόνων κυρίως στο 19ο αι. Εξαιρετικό ενδιαφέρον παρουσιάζουν και οι ιδιωτικές συλλογές. Οι παραστάσεις των αγίων στη Χίο είναι άμεσα συνδεμένες με την ιατρική, γεγονός που υποδηλώνεται κυρίως από τα εργαλεία που φέρουν.
