Η διατριβή μελετά τις κοινωνικές και πολιτικές αλλαγές που σημειώθηκαν στην Κύπρο κατά την διάρκεια της περιόδου 1878-1922. Αντικείμενό της αποτελεί η εξέλιξη της ελληνοκυπριακής κοινότητας κατά την εν λόγω περίοδο. Ενώ δίδονται επίσης ορισμένα στοιχεία σχετικά με την τουρκοκυπριακή κοινότητα. Στο πρώτο μέρος αναλύονται οι πολιτικές και κοινωνικές ζυμώσεις εντός της ελληνοκυπριακής κοινότητας κατά την περίοδο 1878-1922, με ιδιαίτερη έφαση στις εξελίξεις που αφορούν το νομοθετικό συμβούλιο και την Εκκλησία της Κύπρου. Στο δεύτερο μέρος αναλύονται οι κοινωνικές και οικονομικές αλλαγές που συντελούνται στην Κύπρο κατά τις πρώτες δεκαετίες της βρετανικής κυριαρχίας και ειδικότερα η εξέλιξη της κυπριακής οικονομίας με την ανάδυση νέων οικονομικών ομάδων μετά την αγροτική κρίση του 1887. Η διατριβή βασίστηκε κυρίως σε πρωτογενείς πηγές όπως, το αρχείο της Αρχιγραμματείας, διάφορες ελληνοκυπριακές εφημερίδες της περιόδου, η Κυανή Βίβλος της Κύπρου και η Εφημερίδα της Κυβερνήσεως.
This thesis studies the social and political changes that occured in Cyprus during the period of 1878-1922. The subject of the study is the development of the greek-cypriot community during the abovementioned period. Certain data regarding the turkish-cypriot community are also presented. The first part analyzes the political and social processes within the greek-cypriot community during the period between 1878-1922, with a particular emphasis given to the developments concerning the legislative council and the Church of Cyprus. The second part analyzes the social and economic changes that occured in Cyprus during the first deacades of british rule and especially the evolvement of the Cyprus economy due to the emergence of new economic groups after the agricultural crisis of 1887. This thesis was based maily on primary archive sources as, the Secreterial Series, various greek-cypriot newspapers, the Blue Book of Cyprus and the Cyprus Gazette.
