This doctoral thesis examines aspects of life of Greeks living in the Czech Republic. The Greeks that settled there fall into three categories: the first is the refugees from Greek civil war, who arrived in Czechoslovakia in 1949 and their descendants; the second consists of students, scholars of the Communist Party of Greece, who were sent to Eastern Europe from 1960 onwards; and the third group is those who, after 1990 and the fall of the socialist regime, went to the Czech Republic as immigrants in order to establish a business. These three groups arrived at different times in the Czech land, with different motivation and having different experiences and beliefs. This thesis questions the relationships between these groups, with a particular emphasis on the refugees since they were the largest category over time. The aim of this paper is to contribute to the anthropological study of the societies of Eastern Europe in postsocialist era. By this means, focusing on the entire route of the Greeks in Czech Republic, this thesis highlights aspects of the social changes of the last five decades in Eastern Europe; those aspects regard the politics of identity (“national” issue, minorities, refuges) and their representation by the social sciences
Η διατριβή εξετάζει την ελληνική παρουσία στην Τσεχία κατά τη μεταπολεμική περίοδο. Οι Έλληνες, που είναι εγκατεστημένοι εκεί, ανήκουν σε τρεις κατηγορίες: η πρώτη περιλαμβάνει τους πρόσφυγες του ελληνικού Εμφυλίου, οι οποίοι έφτασαν εκεί το 1949 και τους απόγονους τους· η δεύτερη είναι οι φοιτητές-υπότροφοι του Κομμουνιστικού Κόμματος Ελλάδος, που στέλνονταν στις χώρες της Ανατολικής Ευρώπης από το 1960 κι έπειτα· και η τρίτη είναι οι Έλληνες που, μετά το 1990 και την πτώση του σοσιαλιστικού καθεστώτος, πήγαν στην Τσεχία ως μετανάστες με σκοπό να δημιουργήσουν μία επιχείρηση. Πρόκειται, λοιπόν, για τρεις κατηγορίες ανθρώπων, οι οποίοι έφτασαν στην Τσεχία σε διαφορετικούς χρόνους, με διαφορετικά κίνητρα, διαφορετικά βιώματα και πιστεύω. Η διατριβή παρουσιάζει τις σχέσεις στο εσωτερικό της κάθε μιας από τις παραπάνω κατηγορίες και αναμεταξύ τους, με ιδιαίτερη έμφαση στις μεταξύ των προσφύγων σχέσεις, καθότι αυτοί αποτέλεσαν διαχρονικά την πολυπληθέστερη κατηγορία.
