La tesi di dottorato si concentra sulla presenza degli stradioti, i mercenari di tipo cavalleggero provenienti dal Peloponneso, che furono ampiamente utilizzati nell’esercito veneziano dopo la caduta dell’impero bizantino.Tra gli obiettivi principali dello studio c’erano: a) l’identificazione delle caratteristiche principali delle compagnie stradiotesche; l’origine, la composizione e l’identificazione degli elementi principali che costituiscono le loro caratteristiche e i loro parametri operativi nell’ambito del servizio veneziano; inoltre, b) la loro funzione militare e sociale nel punto di intersezione dei due domini, l’impero bizantino e lo stato veneziano.La dissertazione analizza la funzione del στρατιώτης, il soldato piccolo-proprietario di terra, secondo le fonti giuridiche e storiche byzantine, come contesto istituzionale e sostanziale del fenomeno storico stradiotesco. L’analisi del fenomeno, nella sua dimensione antropogenica, viene presentata riguardando l’evoluzione dei possedimenti veneziani in Oriente e all’interno del particolare ambiente sociale. Inoltre, viene tentato un riferimento specifico alla diaspora dei gruppi di stradioti in Occidente. In particolare, ci sono capitoli dedicati alla genealogia e prosopografia di stradioti, alla loro identità, così come alla raffigurazione di stradioti nell’arte.
The PhD thesis focuses on the presence of the stradioti, the mercenary light armored horsemen from the Peloponnese, who were extensively used in the Venetian army after the fall of the Byzantine Empire.Among the main purposes of the study were: a) the identification of the basic features of the compagnie di stradioti; the origin, composition and identification of the main elements constituting their characteristics and their operating parameters under the Venetian service; also, b) their military and social function at the point of the two dominions’ intersection, the Byzantine Empire and the Venetian state.The dissertation analyzes the function of the στρατιώτης, the smallholding soldier according to Byzantine legal and historical sources as the institutional and substantial background of the historical phenomenon. The examination of the phenomenon, in its anthropogenic dimension, is being presented regarding the evolution of the Venetian possessions in the East and within the particular social environment. A specific reference is made of the diaspora of the stradioti groups in the West. In particular, several chapters are devoted to genealogy and portrayal or identity issues as well as the depiction of stradioti in art.
H διατριβή έχει ως αντικείμενο την παρουσία των stradioti, μισθοφόρων ιππέων προερχόμενων από την Πελοπόννησο, οι οποίοι χρησιμοποιήθηκαν εκτενώς στο βενετικό στράτευμα μετά από την πτώση της βυζαντινής αυτοκρατορίας. Σκοποί της μελέτης ήταν: α) O προσδιορισμός και η αποτύπωση των βασικών χαρακτηριστικών των μισθοφορικών ομάδων stradioti -η προέλευση, η σύνθεση και ο εντοπισμός των κυριότερων στοιχείων που συγκροτούσαν την ιδιαιτερότητά τους αλλά και οι παράμετροι λειτουργίας τους υπό τη βενετική υπηρεσία. β) H πολεμική και κοινωνική τους λειτουργία στην τομή δύο πολιτειακών συνόλων, της βυζαντινής αυτοκρατορίας και του βενετικού κράτους. Στη διατριβή αναλύεται η λειτουργία του στρατιώτη σύμφωνα με τις βυζαντινές νομικές και ιστορικές πηγές, ως το θεσμικό και πραγματικό υπόβαθρο ανάπτυξης του ιστορικού φαινομένου. Η εξέταση του φαινομένου, στην ανθρωπογεωγραφική του διάσταση, αναπτύσσεται ανάλογα με την εξέλιξη των βενετικών κτήσεων στην Ανατολή και εντός του συγκεκριμένου κοινωνικού περιβάλλοντος. Ιδιαίτερη μνεία γίνεται στη διασπορά των ομάδων στη Δύση. Ειδικότερα κεφάλαια είναι αφιερωμένα σε γενεαλογικά και προσωπογραφικά ζητήματα, σε ζητήματα ταυτοτήτων και στην απεικόνιση των stradioti στην τέχνη
