Ἡ Ἁγία καὶ Μεγάλη Σύνοδος τῆς Ὀρθοδόξου Ἐκκλησίας, ὡς μέγα ἱστορικὸ γεγονός, ἀποτελεῖ ὁρόσημο γιὰ τὴν ἱστορία τῆς Ἐκκλησίας καὶ προνόμιο τῆς δικῆς μας γενεᾶς. Ἀναντιρρήτως ἡ προπαρασκευαστικὴ περίοδος ὑπῆρξε μακρὰ γιὰ τὴν ἱστορία. Ὅμως, ὁ ἰσχυρισμὸς ὅτι ὁ διαρρεύσας χρόνος παρῆλθε ἄκαρπος θὰ ἦταν ἄδικος. Μάλιστα, ἐὰν κάποιος ἐπιλέξει νὰ ἀξιολογήσει τὸ ἔργο τῆς Συνόδου χωρὶς νὰ μελετήσει τὶς διεργασίες τῶν 93 ἐτῶν ποὺ προηγήθηκαν, σίγουρα θὰ ἀδικήσει τὰ πράγματα. Οἱ Ὀρθόδοξες Ἐκκλησίες ὅλο αὐτὸ τὸ διάστημα μετεῖχαν τῆς συνοδικῆς λειτουργίας ἑνὸς ἱεραρχικῶς συντεταγμένου σώματος τῆς Ὀρθοδοξίας· βρῆκαν τὸν ἱερὸ χῶρο, ὅπου ὁ λόγος τους, οἱ ἐποικοδομητικὲς ἢ καὶ ἐριστικές τους ἀντιπαραθέσεις μετασχηματιζόταν σὲ ὑπεύθυνο διορθόδοξο διάλογο· προσπάθησαν νὰ ἀπέχουν μονομερῶν ἢ καὶ αὐθαιρέτων ἐνεργειῶν· προσάρμοσαν τὴν παρουσία τους στὸ πλαίσιο ποὺ ἔθεταν οἱ ἱεροὶ κανόνες, γιὰ νὰ μὴ ἀθετοῦνται τὰ καθιερωμένα ὅρια τῶν κανονικῶν σχέσεων· συνειδητοποίησαν τὸν ὑπερεθνικό τους χαρακτῆρα· ἐξέφρασαν τὴν ἀπόλυτη ἐσωτερική τους ἑνότητα, πάρα τὴν ἐθνολογικὴ καὶ γλωσσικὴ διάκριση καὶ παρὰ τὴ φαινομενικὰ ἐπιζήμια καὶ κινδυνώδη ἀποκέντρωση καὶ ἀνεξαρτησία τους· συνέσφιξαν ἀκόμη περισσότερο τοὺς μεταξύ τους δεσμούς· συνεργάσθηκαν στενότερα ἐπὶ τῶν διορθοδόξων καὶ τῶν διαχριστιανικῶν ζητημάτων· παρουσιάσθηκαν ὡς ὄγκος σεβαστὸς ἀπέναντι στὶς Ἐκκλησίες τῆς Δύσεως· καὶ παρεῖχαν τὴν ἐπιβλητικὴ μαρτυρία τῆς Ὀρθοδοξίας στὸ σύγχρονο κόσμο.
The Holy and Great Council of the Orthodox Church as a great historical event is a landmark for the history of the Church and a privilege of our generation. Undoubtedly the preparatory period has been long for history. But the claim that the leaked time has passed fruitlessly would be unfair. In fact, if someone chooses to evaluate the work of the Council, without studying the processes of the previous 93 years, he will certainly do injustice to things. The local Orthodox Churches all this time participated in the synodal operation of a hierarchically ordinated body of Orthodoxy; they found the sacred space, where their speech, their constructive or even divisive controversies, were transformed into a responsible inter orthodox dialogue; they tried to refrain from one-sided or impermissible actions; they accommodated their presence in the framework placed by the Holy Canons and in order to safeguard the established limits of the canonical relations; they developed a better understanding of their supra-national character; they, expressed, their absolute internal unity, in spite of their ethnological and linguistic difference and their apparently harmful and externally dangerous decentralization and independence; they tied up their mutual bonds even closer; they worked together, closely, on inter orthodox and inter Christian issues; they achieved to present themselves as an awe-inspiring body of Christians in the face of the Christian Churches of the West; they offered an imposing presence of the Orthodox faith in the modern world.
