The Subject of the current study is the aniconic decoration in specific areas of the Byzantine Empire (Mainland Greece, Aegean Islands, Crete, Cyprus, Asia Minor) and how it is historically and artistically connected with the movement of Iconoclasm. The main question is whether and to what extent the aniconic church interiors found in extended geographical areas of Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East are related to the Iconoclasm movement, which burdened the Byzantine Empire between the 8th and the 9th century, or whether it was a result of certain aesthetic or artistic cultural perceptions, present in these areas, apparently largely disconnected from theological or historical tendencies. The epicenter of the aniconic painting is the Cross. There are also rich drawings of animals, birds, the geometric symbols, plants as well as the angual geometrical interiors found in many Church domes. Their common characteristic is their presence through time, both before but also after the Iconoclasm period. This type of illustrated evidence is not at times solid, meaning that we come across a mixed cluttered decoration theme.
Αντικείμενο της παρούσας μελέτης είναι ο ανεικονικός διάκοσμος σε περιοχές της Βυζαντινής Αυτοκρατορίας (Ηπειρωτική Ελλάδα, Νησιά Αιγαίου, Κρήτη, Κύπρος, Μ.Ασία) και πως αυτός συνδέεται ιστορικά και καλλιτεχνικά με το κίνημα της Εικονομαχίας. Το βασικό ερώτημα είναι το αν και κατά πόσο ο ανεικονικός διάκοσμος εκκλησιών που συναντάμε σε εκτενείς γεωγραφικές περιοχές της Αν. Μεσογείου και της Μ.Ασίας έχει να κάνει με το εικονομαχικό κίνημα, το οποίο ταλαιπώρησε την Βυζαντινή Αυτοκρατορίας στο χρονικό διάστημα από τον 8ο έως τον 9ο αιώνα, ή απλά ήταν το αποτέλεσμα κάποιων αισθητικών/ εικαστικών αντιλήψεων που προϋπήρχαν στις περιοχές αυτές και κατά συνέπεια ήταν αποσυνδεδεμένο από θεολογικές και ιστορικές συναρτήσεις. Το επίκεντρο της ανεικονικής ζωγραφικής είναι ο σταυρός. Πλούσιες είναι και οι παραστάσεις ζώων, πτηνών, τα γεωμετρικά σύμβολα, ο φυτικός διάκοσμος καθώς και ο γεωμετρικός διάκοσμος που συναντάμε σε πολλούς ναούς. Το χαρακτηριστικό αυτών είναι ότι συναντώνται και πριν αλλά και μετά από την εικονομαχική περίοδο. Το εικονογραφικό πρόγραμμα δεν είναι σε κάποιες περιπτώσεις αμιγές, αλλά συναντάμε σε πολλές «εικονομαχικές» εκκλησίες την παρουσία ενός «μικτού» διακόσμου.
Le sujet de cette étude est la décoration aniconique dans les régions de l'Empire byzantin (Grèce continentale, îles de la mer Égée, Crète, Chypre, Asie centrale) et son lien historique et artistique avec le mouvement iconoclaste. La principale question est de savoir si et dans quelle mesure la décoration aniconique des églises que l'on trouve dans de vastes zones géographiques de la Méditerranée orientale et de l'Asie mineure a à voir avec le mouvement iconoclaste, qui a tourmenté l'Empire byzantin dans la période du VIIIe et IXe siècle, ou simplement le résultat de certains concepts esthétiques/visuels qui préexistaient dans ces régions et étaient par conséquent déconnectés des fonctions théologiques et historiques. Le centre de la peinture aniconique est la croix. Les représentations d'animaux, d'oiseaux, et la décoration végétale et géométrique que l'on trouve dans de nombreuses églises, sont également riches. La caractéristique de ceux-ci est qu'ils se trouvent à la fois avant et après la période iconoclaste. Dans certains cas, le programme iconographique n'est pas pur maison trouve dans de nombreuses églises "iconoclastes" la présence d'un décor "mixte".
