This doctoral thesis explores the underexamined role of conspiracy narratives in Dionysius of Halicarnassus’ Antiquitates Romanae, a work rich with accounts of political intrigue and secret machinations from Rome’s earliest history. Though Dionysius is often studied for his rhetorical mastery, historiographical methods, and engagement with Roman tradition, his treatment of conspiracy remains largely overlooked. This study takes a text-centred approach, seeking toilluminate how Dionysius crafts these narratives and its actors, and what they reveal about his historical vision. Structured in five chapters, the thesis begins with an exploration of language, analysing the vocabulary Dionysius employs to weave his accounts of conspiracy and grouping it into distinct linguistic categories. The second chapter shifts focus to the author’s role in shaping these narratives—his interventions in source material, his narrative techniques, and the ways in which he constructs his identity as a historian while engaging with his readership. The third and most expansive chapter turns to characterisation, examining the figures who populate these conspiratorial episodes—conspirators, accomplices, and victims alike. Rather than approaching them through literary technique alone, this section groups them according to the physical and ethical traits that Dionysius ascribes to them, revealing deeper patterns in his portrayal of conspiracy. The fourth chapter delves into the motivations that drive these conspiratorial actions, distinguishing between internal forces—ambition, fear, personal vendettas—and external pressures, such as political turmoil or shifting alliances. Here, particular attention is given to Dionysius’ narrative voice and the extent to which he inserts himself into the psychology of his characters. The final chapter examines recurring motifs that shape these narratives: the gravity of oaths, the secrecy of nighttime actions, the plea of the supplicant, and the weight of kairoticmoments—those instances of critical timing that can alter the course of the conspiracy. Through these elements, the thesis reveals Dionysius’ broader narrative strategies, ideological leanings, and his conception of history itself. This study sheds light on Dionysius’ handling of conspiracies, offering a deeper understanding of both his historiographical approach.
Στη διδακτορική διατριβή εξετάζω τις αφηγήσεις συνωμοσιών στη Ῥωμαϊκὴ Ἀρχαιολογία του Διονυσίου Αλικαρνασσέα, εστιάζοντας στον τρόπο που τις διηγείται ο συγγραφέας. Παρόλο που ο Διονύσιος έχει μελετηθεί εκτενώς για τη ρητορική και την ιστοριογραφική τουπροσέγγιση, η στάση του απέναντι στις συνωμοσίες παραμένει σε μεγάλο βαθμόανεξερεύνητη. Η διατριβή, δομημένη σε πέντε κεφάλαια, ξεκινά με την ανάλυση της γλώσσαςπου χρησιμοποιεί ο Διονύσιος στις αφηγήσεις συνωμοσιών και με την ταξινόμηση τουλεξιλογίου. Στη συνέχεια, εξετάζεται ο ρόλος του ως ιστορικού, οι αφηγηματικές του τεχνικές και η σχέση του με το αναγνωστικό κοινό. Στο τρίτο κεφάλαιο επικεντρώνομαι στησκιαγράφηση των χαρακτήρων –συνωμοτών, συνεργών και θυμάτων– αναλύοντας τα φυσικά και ηθικά τους χαρακτηριστικά. Το τέταρτο κεφάλαιο διερευνά τα κίνητρα των συνωμοσιών, τα οποία διακρίνονται μεταξύ εσωτερικών και εξωτερικών παραγόντων, ενώ παράλληλα εξετάζει την ψυχολογική διείσδυση του Διονυσίου στους χαρακτήρες του. Το τελευταίο κεφάλαιο αναλύει επαναλαμβανόμενα μοτίβα, όπως οι όρκοι, η μυστικότητα της νύχτας και οι κρίσιμες στιγμές που καθορίζουν την πορεία μιας συνωμοσίας. Μέσα από αυτήν τη μελέτη, η διατριβή αναδεικνύει τις αφηγηματικές στρατηγικές του Διονυσίου, τις ιστοριογραφικές του πεποιθήσεις και τη συνολικότερη αντίληψή του για την ιστορία, προσφέροντας μια νέα οπτική στη Ῥωμαϊκὴ Ἀρχαιολογία.
