ABSTRACT in English
Τhe aim of this research is to indicate the extent to which learners' intercultural com- petence is enhanced by involving them in tasks that are designed to promote intercul- tural awareness. Specifically, this dissertation is structured upon a particular teaching case of primary school students in the Greek private educational context examining how effective the implementation of the content-based teaching activities aiming at developing learners’ plurilingual and pluricultural competence is. In fact, this disserta- tion proposes activities inspired by the ConBat project, an ECML project which aims at developing learners’ plurilingual and pluricultural competence. It then investigates through the use of a questionnaire, the degree to which students believe that these ac- tivities have enhanced their intelingual and intercultural competence. The research indicates that learners’ intercultural competence and knowledge is increased by in- volving students’ in tasks that reflect upon the notions of plurilingualism and pluri- culturalism/ interlingualism and interculturalism.
In this study twenty (20) B1 level primary school students have participated. The study has been conducted into two phases. The first phase involves the develop- ment and implementation of a programme using the ConBat activities. This will be an 8 week program that includes activities designed by the teacher. The material devel- oped for the purposes of this project contains activities to foster positive attitudes to- wards languages, their speakers and their cultures. In the second phase, the study con- ducts a quantitative analysis based on a questionnaire, which records students’ views on the program in which they participated. The findings of the research reveal a posi- tive differentiation on students’ motivation to learn due to the implementation of con- tent-based activities, suggesting that the effective application of the project can stimu- late learners’ willingness to be involved in learning English and other languages. In view of these results, specific implications are discussed and several suggestions for future research are made.
