Μέσα στα τρία λογοτεχνικά έργα αναζητούνται οι έννοιες της μετάνοιας και της συγχώρεσης, ως βίωμα των ηρώων. Αναδεικνύεται η διακειμενικότητα της Βίβλου που διαποτίζει τα κείμενα και χρησιμοποιείται αριστοτεχνικά από τους συγγραφείς, οι οποίοι φτάνουν σε βαθιά θεολογικά και πνευματικά πεδία, χωρίς την πρόθεση να δώσουν στο αναγνωστικό τους κοινό ένα θεολογικό κείμενο. Σκάβουν στις ψυχές των χαρακτήρων για να ανακαλύψουν τον πόνο και τον αγώνα του κάθε ανθρώπου που επιθυμεί να λυτρωθεί μέσα από τη μετάνοια και τη συγχώρεση για τα λάθη του. Ο Ουγκώ, ο Ντοστογιέφσκι και ο Παπαδιαμάντης, συναντιούνται πνευματικά και λογοτεχνικά σε μια μυστική συνομιλία με κοινό παράγοντα τη Βίβλο και τη χριστιανική πίστη. Η μελέτη, μέσα από τη σύγκριση, παρουσιάζει τις συγκλίσεις και τις αποκλίσεις τους στο θέμα της μετάνοιας. Άλλοι ήρωες, μέσα από την πάλη με τη συνείδησή τους, σηκώνουν το σταυρό τους και φτάνουν στην Ανάσταση κι άλλοι ενώ παραδέχονται τα λάθη τους, αυτοκτονούν μη μπορώντας να ταπεινωθούν ζητώντας το έλεος του Θεού και τη συγχώρεση των συνανθρώπων τους.

The specific focus centers on the thematic inquiry titled "Repentance and Forgiveness in 19th Century Literature: A Comparative Analysis of Hugo's Les Misérables, Dostoyevsky's Crime and Punishment, and Papadiamantis' Easter Short Stories." This selection stems from the inherent connections between these works and authors.
The examination revolves around the integration of biblical references to repentance and forgiveness by each author through the characters-heroes they create. Insights will be provided on how these characters grapple with their passions, acknowledge their errors, and navigate the challenging path of overcoming selfishness, vindictiveness, and grudges to seek divine mercy. The decision-making process is portrayed as intricate, with characters like Jean Valjean wavering, Raskolnikov experiencing misgivings, and the heroes in Papadiamantis' narratives displaying moments of hesitation.
The initial chapter lays the foundation with relevant excerpts from the Bible and the writings of the Church Fathers on the subject. Subsequent chapters conduct individual analyses of each work, focusing on how the heroes within them engage with the concepts of repentance and forgiveness. The fifth and final chapter employs a comparative approach to establish the extent and manner in which the three works intersect. Rather than scrutinizing the works solely on a narrative level, emphasis is placed on thematic concepts such as conscience, prayer, the Cross, and love to elucidate the convergences and divergences among them.
The thesis argues that repentance is a nuanced and multi-layered process akin to martyrdom, emphasizing that it is not a singular moment but an ongoing journey. Through an exploration of the struggles faced by literary heroes as they contend with their inner conflicts, conscience, and both internal and external adversaries, the thesis aims to illustrate the transformative nature of repentance. The overarching narrative mirrors the prodigal son's journey of being lost and then returning, ultimately finding redemption in the arms of the father. This research asserts that classic literary works serve as a conduit for uncovering the concealed theology of Christianity, providing profound insights that have resonated with millions of readers worldwide.
