Ο μύθος της Σεμέλης έχει αποτυπωθεί σε όλα σχεδόν τα λογοτεχνικά είδη για πάνω από χίλια έτη, αρχής γενομένης από τον Όμηρο και τον Ησίοδο έως και τον ύστερο ουμανισμό. Στην παρούσα μελέτη γίνεται μια προσπάθεια ερμηνείας του συγκεκριμένου μύθου στο έργο του Giovanni Boccaccio, Genealogia Deorum Gentilium. Στο πρώτο κεφάλαιο γίνεται αναφορά στα βιογραφικά στοιχεία του Giovanni Boccaccio και στο συνολικό του έργο, καθώς και συνοπτική περιγραφή των 15 κεφαλαίων της Genealogia Deorum Gentilium. Στο δεύτερο κεφάλαιο παρουσιάζεται ο μύθος της Σεμέλης, όπως απαντάται σε δύο κεφάλαια της Γενεαλογίας, αλλά και σε άλλους συγγραφείς, αρχαίους Έλληνες και Λατίνους ανά τους αιώνες. Στο τρίτο και τελευταίο κεφάλαιο επιχειρείται αναλυτικός και συγκριτικός σχολιασμός των χωρίων της Γενεαλογίας, καθώς και η συγκριτική μελέτη με το έργο που φαίνεται να τον έχει επηρεάσει περισσότερο, τις Μεταμορφώσεις του Οβιδίου. Στόχος της παρούσας εργασίας είναι να αναδείξει την προσπάθεια του Giovanni Boccaccio να περιγράψει με ορθολογιστικό τρόπο τον μύθο, ιδωμένο μέσω των πρωτότυπων πηγών που είχε συγκεντρώσει, και με παράθεση των προσωπικών του διαπιστώσεων, ώστε εκμεταλλευόμενος με τον καλύτερο δυνατό τρόπο αυτές τις πηγές να υπηρετήσει τον στόχο να ερμηνεύσει ορθολογιστικά τον παγανιστικό κόσμο της αρχαιότητας, αναδεικνύοντας ταυτόχρονα και την αδιάλειπτη αλληλεπίδραση της ελληνορωμαϊκής λογοτεχνικής επιρροής διαχρονικά.

The myth of Semele has been a subject of literary depiction across nearly all genres for over a millennium, commencing with Homer and Hesiod and extending into the period of late humanism. The present study endeavors to interpret this myth as it is articulated in Giovanni Boccaccio’s Genealogia Deorum Gentilium. The first chapter provides an overview of Giovanni Boccaccio’s biographical background and his corpus of work, alongside a concise summary of the 15 books constituting the Genealogia Deorum Gentilium.
The second chapter examines the myth of Semele as it is presented in two chapters of the Genealogia, as well as its representation in the works of other authors, both ancient Greek and Roman, throughout the centuries. The third and final chapter undertakes a detailed and comparative analysis of the relevant passages from the Genealogia, with particular focus on a comparative study with the work that appears to have exerted the greatest influence on Boccaccio, Ovid’s Metamorphoses.
The aim of this study is to elucidate Giovanni Boccaccio’s rationalistic approach to the interpretation of the myth, as informed by the original sources he meticulously compiled and his own critical insights. By leveraging these sources to their fullest potential, Boccaccio sought to provide a rational interpretation of the pagan world of antiquity, while simultaneously underscoring the enduring interplay of Greco-Roman literary influences over time.
