In this paper the gold coinage produced by the kings of Cyprus during the IVth century B.C. is presented in order to highlight the unique character of the island. The first part is dedicated to the general presentation of the gold coins minted at Kition, Salamis, Marion and Soloi. The second focuses on the representations of Aphrodite’s head on the gold coins of Salamis, which find their parallels on Cypriote sculptures. In this context the bust decorating the reverse side of the gold coins of the last salaminian kings, traditionally considered as the image of Aphrodite or unknown goddess, is studied. The different elements that compose this image allow us to argue that it is more appropriate to regard the depicted bust as that of a male figure. Finally the introduction of the Greek alphabet in Cyprus and its appearance on the gold coins is also briefly discussed.
