The current diploma thesis has been written to emphasize the importance of the lean manufacturing in combination with 4.0 industry principles, in contemporary times. Aviation industry has experienced rapid growth over the past 30 years and its growth rate is increasing exponentially. There is a gigantic need for tools, good practices & techniques and a continuous improvement attitude, in order the disruption to be avoided while the ramp-up continuously is being increased smoothly. The main element of this master thesis is not only to present an overview about Lean Automation – a fine balance between Lean manufacturing and Automation technology – but also how a lean method (Andon), explicated and evolved in a way to support industry’s 4.0 principles and enables production to reduce reaction times over issues and incidents on the shop-floor. In respect of the method and the solution provided, in the last section it has been discovered that combining Lean Production methods with industry 4.0 principles in mind, it is possible the creation of a semi/fully autonomous operating system, which is boosting factory’s connectivity and smartness, transforming a conventional factory into a Smart Factory.
